SMALL SLUDGE FIRE HITS LEAKY OIL-TANK FARM

A small fire broke out Wednesday in a storage tank being cleaned at the Star Enterprises tank farm, Fairfax County fire officials said.

Deputy Fire Chief William Boehm said some sludge ignited as welding was being done in the tank. The fire was quickly extinguished and there was no immediate estimate of damage.

Over the past decades, thousands of gallons of petroleum products have leaked from the huge storage tanks into the soil, reaching into two surrounding neighborhoods.

Texaco, owner of Star Enterprises, has bought some of the homes tainted by the leaks and is doing a multimillion-dollar cleanup of the tainted soil.

Boehm said the fire had nothing to do with the underground leak. - Associated Press
