The 11th annual VCAN Conference - formerly Virginia-Central America Network and now Virginians Concerned About Neighbors - will be held in the Dana Science Building from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Keynote speaker at 9:15 a.m. will be Isaiah Madison, executive director of the Institute for Southern Studies in Durham. A regional research organization, the institute publishes the award-winning magazine Southern Exposure.
Also scheduled to speak is Elvia Alvarado, an organizer for peasant rights in Honduras and author of the book "Don't Be Afraid Gringo."
The conference - with workshops on Latin America, racism, media monopolies, labor issues and health care - will cost $15 but will be free for low-income and unemployed people. For information, call organizers at Plowshare Peace and Justice Center, 985-0808.
