OBIT BASSETT, MARY HENRIAN
BASSETT, Mary Henrian, 91, of Roanoke, formerly of Henry County, died
Monday, November 8, 1993, at Friendship Manor Nursing Home. She was the
daughter of the late Walter J. and Allie Taylor Bassett of Preston, Va., and
the older sister of the late Alice Bassett Reynolds. Miss Bassett was an
elementary school teacher in Henry and Pittsylvania Counties from 1922-1935,
Librarian at Southern Christian Institute, Edward, Mississippi from 1936-1953,
Librarian at Lynchburg College, Lynchburg from 1954-1967, exchange Librarian
at Moray House School of Education, University of Edinburg, Edinburg, Scotland
from 1960-1961, and a part-time reference Librarian at Lynchburg Public
Library, Lynchburg from 1967-1972. She was active in the work of the Christian
Church (Disciples of Christ) where ever she lived. She traveled extensively in
the 1950's and 1960's around the world and in the U.S., often visiting
institutions of the Christian Church as she traveled. Surviving are a niece,
Mary Virginia R. Quinn, Radford, Va.; a nephew, Walter Johnson Reynolds,
Whitethorne, Va.; one grandniece; four grandnephews; three great-grandnieces;
two great-grandnephews; cousins on the Bassett and Taylor side of the family.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, November 11, 1993, at
Pleasant Grove Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The Rev. William
Whitehurst and the Rev. Terry Willis will officiate. Interment will follow in
the Bassett Family Cemetery. Prior to the funeral service in the family will
receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon at the church. In lieu of flowers,
memorials contributions may be made to the Lynchburg Library or the Medical
College of Virginia (for research). The family will receive friends Wednesday
from 7 to 9 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg, Va.
