ROANOKE-AREA RESIDENTS WIN STATE FAIR AWARDS

Roanoke-area residents win state fair awards

Several Roanoke Valley residents won awards during competition at the Virginia State Fair in Richmond.

Raymond Barton of Salem won Best of Section in Home Arts and Best of Show in Arts and Crafts for his model of a Pepsi tractor-trailer truck that was featured in a Sept. 16 Neighbors story. The model also had won Barton first place in his class in Arts and Crafts. The model had won first in the Salem Fair. This is the second consecutive year Barton has won first place awards in the state fair for his models.

Other Roanoke Valley winners included: Victoria Person, first for Flags or Banner, second in Holiday Novelty, third in Afghan Granny Square; and Nancy Boyer Carter, third in Afghan.

Several Roanoke-area riders also earned awards during the fair's horse show.

Cindy Quick of Roanoke received first in Arabian Country English Pleasure-Amateur, Open Arabian Country English Pleasure, Open Arabian Country English Pleasure Championship; second in Arabian Western Pleasure Ladies to Ride; and third in Open Hunter Pleasure and Open Hunter Pleasure Championship, Arabian English Show Hack, Arabian English Show Hack Championship.

Gilda Carroll of Blue Ridge received first in Arabian English Pleasure Mares and Geldings, Mounted Native Costume Arabian, Arabian English Pleasure Open, Arabian English Pleasure Ladies to Ride, Reserve Champion Mounted Native Costume, Arabian English Pleasure Open Championship.

A team from the Daleville 4-H Horse and Pony Club won 23 ribbons during the fair's 4-H Horse Show. Each member of the team received a blue ribbon in stable management. Members were: Katie Massey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Massey of Roanoke; Susan Grubbs, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Grubbs of Troutville; Jessica and Jennifer Singleton, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Doug Singleton of Troutville; Jamie Myers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Myers of Fincastle; Jennifer Billings, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Danny Billings of Troutville; Kim Campbell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Campbell of Roanoke; and Amber Lester, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Lester of Blue Ridge.
