ROBERTS' BASKET SENDS SHAWNEES TO MEET BUFFALOES

Amy Roberts hit a field goal with five minutes remaining to lift Shawsville past host Fort Chiswell 39-37 in the semifinals of the Mountain Empire district girls' basketball tournament Thursday night at Max Meadows.

Shawsville clinched a Group A Region C playoff berth and will play top-seeded Floyd County in Saturday night's championship.

Nobody scored after Roberts' field goal, and the two teams combined to score three points in the final quarter. Fort Chiswell missed the first free throw in bonus situations six times and missed several field-goal attempts.

Brandy Alexander led the Shawnees with 10 points.

In another Mountain Empire District game:

\ Floyd County 85, Narrows 39: At Max Meadows, 14 Buffaloes scored in a tournament semifinal rout of the Green Wave.

Floyd County (22-1), ranked fourth in Timesland, jumped to a 20-9 lead after one quarter and steadily increased its lead.

The Buffaloes will play second-seed Shawsville in Saturday night's championship.

Floyd's Lynette Nolley led all scorers with 16 points.

Seminole District

Staunton River 60, William Campbell 43: At Moneta, Deena Mitchell scored a career-high 24 points as the host Golden Eagles whipped the Generals in a tournament semifinal game.

William Campbell, seeded fifth, swarmed over Staunton River's Tanya Nelms, who went into the game averaging almost 18 points per game. That left Mitchell, who averaged 10 points per game in the regular season, to pick up the slack.

Staunton River (20-2), winners of the regular season title, jumped to a 29-18 halftime lead and will play in Saturday night's championship.

Brookville 68, Liberty 57: At Moneta, the Bees turned up their defensive pressure in the second and fourth quarters to advance to the tournament final.

Brookville took control by outscoring Liberty 19-9 in the second quarter and sealed the victory by winning the fourth quarter 15-8. Kristi Fisher led the Bees with 19 points, Jackie Gay had 17 and Karen Doran added 16.

The Minettes got a game-high 21 points from Kellea Whorley and Sue Cowlbeck added 14 points.

Brookville meets Staunton River for the tournament championship Saturday night at 7:30 in Moneta.
