STAGG BOWL TICKET SALES PASS 3,000

One month before the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, ticket sales for the NCAA Division III football championship game at Salem Stadium have exceeded 3,000.

Carey Harveycutter, game director for the Stagg Bowl and Salem Civic Center manager, said Thursday the bowl committee's goal of $50,000 in corporate sponsorships almost has been reached as well.

In addition to the 3,072 tickets sold, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference is committed to 700 tickets and the competing schools in the Dec. 11 game will receive 500 apiece.

Salem Stadium seats 8,000.

The NCAA Division III Football Committee will select the 16 teams for the tournament field leading to the Stagg Bowl on Sunday morning. Committee chairman James "Moose" Malmquist, athletic director at Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) College, will reveal the pairings and bracket at noon Sunday in a half-hour satellite telecast from Kansas City, Mo.

Two local cable systems will air the pairings show live on their public access channels - on Salem Cable TV (Channel 3) and Cox Cable Roanoke (Channel 9). Those with satellite dishes can pick up the telecast on Galaxy 7, Transponder 18 Vertical, with 6.2 Audio.

The tournament begins Saturday, Nov. 20 with eight games at campus sites.

Stagg Bowl tickets remain on sale - $8 in advance, $10 on game day, $5 for high school students and younger - at the Salem Civic Center box office. - Staff report
