APPALACHIAN COMMISSION GROWTH GETS PANEL'S OK

The U.S. House of Representatives Public Works and Transportation Committee has approved a bill that would add several Western Virginia localities to the Appalachian Regional Commission.

Reps. Robert Goodlatte, R-Roanoke, and Rick Boucher, D-Abingdon, announced Wednesday that the legislation adding Montgomery, Roanoke and Rockbridge counties and the cities of Roanoke, Radford, Lexington, Buena Vista and Salem to the ARC is headed for consideration by the full House.

The committee vote was unanimous. The congressmen expect the bill to move "favorably as a noncontroversial bill" through the House in January, said Joe Shoemaker, a spokesman for Boucher.

The ARC is an economic development agency born out of the 1960s War on Poverty. It provides grants for vocational education and job training; water, sewer and road projects; tourism development; and projects that improve accessibility to health care.
