GM REBUILDS BRIDGES TO SALARIED WORKERS

General Motors President Jack Smith extended a $1,600 olive branch to each of his white-collar troops Thursday, partially offsetting their higher out-of-pocket health insurance costs that hourly workers escaped.

On March 15, each of GM's 65,000 salaried workers in the United States will receive $1,600. They may exchange $600 for four additional paid days off in 1994. The program will cost GM between $65 million and $104 million depending on how many people take the vacation days.

In addition, GM decided to give out all salaried raises next June 1, instead of staggering them throughout the year as it used to do. Those raises, which won't be paid to everyone, are based on performance reviews and other criteria.
