University of Virginia linebacker Tim Benson was one of 15 college football players selected as a 1993 National Scholar Athlete by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. William and Mary defensive tackle Craig Staub and Hampton University receiver Tim Benson were other selections from Virginia.
The Virginia Tech women's basketball team officially received a national letter of intent from Lynette Nolley, a 6-foot-1 guard from Floyd. Nolley starts for Floyd County's basketball team and was the Mountain Empire District's player of the year in 1992.
Also signing letters of intent for the Hokies were 5-6 guard Renee Maitland from Allentown, Pa.; 6-1 forward Michelle Hollister from Yardley, Pa.; and 6-1 forward Sonya Melton from Wyncote, Pa.
The Liberty University men's basketball team received a national letter of intent from 6-1 guard Marcus White on Thursday. White, from Austin, Texas, averaged 15 points, nine assists and seven rebounds per game last year for A.N. McCallum High School.
The Liberty University women's basketball team received a national letter of intent from 6-1 forward Jennifer Eaddy. Eaddy, who plays for Florence High School in Florence, S.C., averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds a game last year.
Virginia men's lacrosse coach Don Starsia chose seniors Drew Fox, Woody Moore, and Craig Ronald as the team's captains for the 1994 season.
