OBIT SHUMATE, REV. ALBERT J.

SHUMATE, Rev. Albert J., of Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, November 10, 1993. Having fought the good fight, kept the faith and faithfully served his Lord for 92 years, the Rev. Albert J. Shumate entered the Church Triumphant. A twin son of the late Annie R. and Thomas S. Shumate, he was born on October 20, 1901, in Augusta County. After completing high school in Churchville, he entered Roanoke College, graduating in 1926, and entered the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, S.C. with ordination in 1929. His pastorates included his home church, St. Peter and Pleasant View in Churchville, the Cocke County Parish in Parrottsville, Tenn., and Muhlenberg, Harrisonburg. He served as pastor of the Rural Retreat Lutheran Parish, Grace and St. Paul from 1941-1966. After retirement, he pastored the Burkes Garden and Ceres Churches until November 1, 1980. Pastor Shumate's many interests and zeal for life endeared him to the community. Having served as scoutmaster of Troop #58 for many years, he was given the Silver Beaver Award in 1955. He was also responsible for trail upkeep on a section of the Applachian Trail. Pastor Shumate also was a charter member of the Rural Retreat Lions Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lottie Talliaferro Shumate and is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Eleanor S. and John F. Hall; a son and daughter-in-law, G. Dallas and Margaret M. Shumate, all of Rural Retreat; his twin brother, The Rev. Alfred R. Shumate of Wytheville; a sister, Phyllis S. Cupp of Churchville; six grandchildren and five great-grandsons also survive. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 13, 1993, at 11 a.m. from the Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor Larry M. Bollinger and Bishop Richard Bansemer officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery in Rural Retreat. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Grace Lutheran Church Endowment Fund, P.O. Box 478, Rural Retreat, Va. 24368. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Lindsey Funeral Home or at the residences of his children at any time. Lindsey Funeral Home, Rural Retreat is in charge of arrangements.
