RADFORD COACH WINS AWARD IN BIG SOUTH

Radford's Janell Dobbins was honored Friday as the Big South Conference Coach of the Year in volleyball.

Dobbins, who guided the Highlanders to a third-place finish during the regular season, has announced her retirement effective at the end of the season. She has a record of 367-218, and her team faces UNC Greensboro at 10 a.m. today in a Big South tournament semifinal in Rock Hill, S.C. Radford defeated UNC Asheville 13-15, 15-8, 15-7, 15-6 on Friday night.

The Highlanders' Anne Fontaine, a senior from George Wythe High School, was named a first-team All-Big South selection. The two-time all-conference choice has led Radford in kills and digs each of the past three seasons.

Four Virginia Tech men's soccer players were named to the All-Metro Conference second team announced Friday.

The four, selected by conference coaches, were: senior forward Jason Entlich, senior defender Mike Serio, senior goalkeeper Brian Bulger and junior midfielder Rodney Walsh.

Virginia Commonwealth dominated the first team with five players, including the Metro's Outstanding Offensive Performer, Kwaku Adu-Gyamfi. The Rams' Lincoln Phillips was named Coach of the Year.

Rob Hodgson, a highly regarded basketball prospect from Mastic Beach, N.Y., announced that he had chosen Indiana over Virginia, Ohio State and Stanford.

Hodgson, a 6-foot-7 forward, took his final recruiting visit to UVa last weekend. "It was like splitting hairs," Bob Hodgson, Rob's father and coach, said of the decision.

Clemson forward Devin Gray was arrested Thursday on an assault charge and then released. The arrest stemmed from a fight in a campus parking lot on Oct. 22. Gray, 21, was released on $279 bond pending a trial date.

The incident also involved Clemson center Sharone Wright and guard Lou Richie.

"The situation involves an incident which was reported earlier," said Cliff Ellis, the Tigers' coach. "We have already taken disciplinary action as a team regarding the incident."

Ellis suspended Wright and Gray for the team's first exhibition game, while Richie will miss two preseason games.
