BLANKENSHIP, NARROWS ROLL FORT CHISWELL

Whitey Blankenship keeps rolling along.

The senior running back raced for 230 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries to lead Narrows over Fort Chiswell 37-6 in a Mountain Empire district rout Friday night.

The Green Wave (8-2 overall, 6-2 district) will play host to Pioneer district runner-up Bath County in the first round of the Group A Region C playoffs next week.

Narrows quarterback Jeff White threw touchdown passes to Emory Turner and Keith Morris as the Green Wave bolted to a 24-6 halftime lead.

Brad Coleman threw a 31-yard pass to Chad Lewis for Fort Chiswell's points.

Blankenship scored on runs of 6 and 47 yards, and the Green Wave limited the Pioneers (3-7, 3-5) to 63 yards on the ground.

Blankenship ends the regular season with 1,641 yards rushing.

Galax 17\ Auburn 6

RINER - Bobby Melton sparked the rushing attack with 85 yards on 17 carries as the Maroon Tide closed its season with a Mountain Empire District victory over the Eagles.

Galax (4-6, 4-4) took a 3-0 halftime lead on a 31-yard field goal by Paul Orton. The Maroon Tide took control with 7:35 to go in the game, when Andy Ashworth scored on a 1-yard run and Orton kicked the extra point.

Auburn (4-6, 3-5) cut its deficit to four points with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Danny Dickerson to Randy Bonds with 3:50 to go. But the Eagles' last gasp ended when they turned over the ball on downs deep in their own territory.

Galax sealed the victory with a 2-yard touchdown run by Eli Lowe with 48 seconds left.

Giles 49\ Shawsville 14

PEARISBURG - Kevin Slusser touched the ball only four times in the unbeaten Spartans' Mountain Empire District victory over Shawsville. He scored on each of those occasions.

Slusser rushed for three touchdowns and returned a punt for another TD for Giles (10-0, 8-0). The Shawnees (2-8, 1-7) got 211 of their 240 yards total offense on Darrell Bibb's rushing.

Floyd County 21\ Grayson County 20

INDEPENDENCE - Monty Moran hit Jason Pratt from 18 yards out with 1 minute and 19 seconds remaining, and Nicky Nichols kicked the extra point as the Buffaloes recoverd from a 17-0 deficit to edge the Blue Devils in a Mountain Empire District game.

Grayson County's Shane Griffith saw a 47-yard field goal attempt go wide right with three seconds remaining.

Griffith gave Grayson County (5-5, 4-4) a 20-7 halftime lead when he hit a 54-yard field goal. It is the fifth-longest field goal in state history (tied with Jason O'Dell of Martinsville, 1991) and the second longest in Timesland history. The longest was 58 yards.

The Buffaloes (7-3, 6-2) scored with one second remaining in the third quarter when Phillip Marshall recovered a Blue Devils fumble in the end zone.

Floyd County recoverd another Blue Devils fumble with three minutes remaining in the game, which set up Moran's winning touchdown pass.

Graham 7\ Radford 0

BLUEFIELD - Brandon Banks' 42-yard touchdown run gave the G-Men all the points they needed in a non-district game.

Radford (4-6) will play at Graham in next week's Group AA Region IV playoffs. The Bobcats were held to 24 yards rushing on 22 attempts, and 45 yards total offense.

The Bobcats tackled Graham's punter in the first quarter and got the ball on the G-Men's 30-yard line, but turned it over on downs. They never threatened the rest of the way.

Banks led the G-Men (8-2) with 80 yards rushing.

George Wythe 13\ Chilhowie 7

WYTHEVILLE - The Maroons capped a perfect regular season and won the Hogoheegee District title with the hard-fought victory over the Warriors.

Robert Dillow's 20-yard touchdown run with a fumbled option pitch in the fourth quarter clinched the victory for the Maroons (10-0, 7-0), who advance to Region C Division 2 play next weekend.

George Wythe fumbled away three scoring opportunities inside the Chilhowie 10.

Tailback Chris Dickinson led the Wythe offense with 66 rushing yards.

Chilhowie (7-3, 5-2) also qualified for the Region C Division 2 playoffs.

Rural Retreat 35\ Pocahontas 10

RURAL RETREAT - Rusty Crigger had two receptions for touchdowns and returned a punt return for another as Rural Retreat defeated Pocahontas in a non-district game.

Crigger had catches of 75 and 10 yards for touchdowns in the first quarter. Quarterback Chris Bass finished with 133 yards passing. Jason Childers scored the other touchdowns for Rural Retreat (7-3) on runs of 12 and 6 yards.

Aaron Groseclose scored on a 2-yard run for Pocahontas (5-5) in the fourth quarter and added a safety when a Rural Retreat player was called for a personal foul in the end zone.
