OBIT BROWN, BESSIE MAE TUCKER

BROWN, Bessie Mae Tucker, of Powhatan, died Wednesday, November 3, 1993. She was born February 11, 1938, to Wesley Tucker and the late Leona Kirk. She accepted Christ at an early age. Her Christian pilgrimage began at Rocky Mount United Methodist Church in Roanoke, Ala. Bessie moved to Marietta, Ga., and then to Roanoke, Va., where she attended the Lucy Addison High School. After school, she moved to New Jersey, where she met and married Hatcher Brown, and from this union two children were born. They then relocated to the U.S. Virgin Islands, where she was employed with Zenith-Pralex Corporation. While in the Virgin Islands, she was very active in Altona Baptist Church, where she was a faithful and diligent worker devoted to the cause of Christ, where she worked with the youth group and served on the Usher Board. In 1991 she returned to what was considered home in Powhatan. Upon her return, she joined Mt. Pero Baptist Church, where she was a faithful member and served on the Usher Board until her health failed. Bessie was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She possessed a gift of taking something of little beauty and making it beautiful. She will be missed by her family, church, and community. On Wednesday, November 3, 1993, Bessie Mae Brown was called by one of God's Angels to enter into eternal rest at Johnston Willis Hospital in Richmond. She will be lovingly remembered by her devoted husband, Hatcher Brown Jr.; a daughter, Dawn Renee' Murphy; a son, John Jasper Brown; her father, Wesley Tucker; stepmother, Venus Tucker; one grandchild, Eric David Murphy; four godchildren, Shelia Johnson, Marcus Torruellas, Brandon Young and Rentory Brown; one sister, Essie Murray; one stepsister, Juliette Watkins; three brothers, John, Jessie, and Donald Kirk; two aunts, Melinda Jones and Doris Wesley; three uncles, Sgt. Herbert, Manuel Jr., and Clinton Dowdle; mother-in-law, Blanche Hughes Johnson; one son-in-law, Douglas Murphy; six sisters-in-law, Paula, Maggie, Pat, and Ellen Kirk, Mary Simmons, Lucille Haskins; three brothers-in-law, James Brown, Charles Simmons, Robert Haskins; a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Sunday, November 7, 1993, 2 p.m. at the Mt. Pero Baptist Church, Powhatan, with the Rev. Melvin Woodson officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
