NAMES & CHANGES

Ex-banker joins staff at Tech

WALLACE I. ALLEN has been named associate director of corporate and foundation relations in Virginia Tech's office of university development. He formerly was senior vice president and area manager for Dominion Bank, now First Union National Bank of Virginia. In his new position, Allen will be responsible for securing gifts for the university from corporations and foundations.

The Charlotte County native joined Dominion in 1970 as a management trainee and became manager of Dominion's downtown branch office in 1978. He was promoted to vice president and main office manager in 1981 and later to vice president and regional manager.

Since 1990, Allen has been chairman of the steering committee for Tomorrow's Teachers, a mentor program for students in Roanoke schools who plan to teach. He is treasurer of Apple Ridge, an educational day camp and retreat for disadvantaged youth; chairman of fund raising for the Henry Street Festival, sponsored annually by the Harrison Museum of African-American Culture; and a member of the New Century Council, a regional development group.

AGRICULTURE

\ ERIC W. CROWGEY of Wytheville has been named the 1993 Cooperative Young Farmer by the Virginia Council of Farmer Cooperatives. Crowgey has been chairman of the board of both Southern States Wythe County Cooperative and the Wythe County Farm Bureau. He is active in Dairymen Inc. and was president of his local Future Farmers of American chapter while in high school.

COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES

Hollins College recently appointed BRENDA McDANIEL director of campaign communications. Her responsibilities include designing, coordinating and producing the comprehensive public relations package for the college's fund-raising and development efforts. She will work closely with the annual fund, produce the annual report on giving and serve as associate editor for the Hollins magazine.

McDaniel formerly was vice president and public relations manager of Dominion Bank, now First Union National Bank of Virginia. Prior to that she was editor of Roanoker magazine. She graduated from Beckley Junior College with a degree in English and received executive training at Virginia Bankers School of Bank Management at the University of Virginia.

\ DEIRDRE BLACKWOOD has been appointed regional campaign coordinator at Hollins College. Most recently, Blackwood was director of communications of the national coalition for the Bush-Quayle '92 campaign. She has worked as press secretary for political organizations in Washington, D.C. She has also been associate producer of CNN's "Larry King Live" and ABC's "Good Morning America" programs. Blackwood received a bachelor of arts degree in history at Hollins.

\ CHARLES CROSSON, a seven-year veteran of NationsBank, where he was vice president in the Roanoke trust department, has joined Hollins College as director of major and planned gifts. Crosson also worked as an investment broker and a business tax adviser. He is secretary of the Roanoke Valley Estate Planning Council and a member of the International Association for Financial Planning. He received a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics and business from Gettysburg (Pa.) College and earned financial planning certification from Denver's College for Financial Planning.

\ MARTIN SKELLY has been named director of corporate and foundation relations at Hollins College. He was vice president of Recovery Systems in Salem, executive director of the Cabell Brand Center and a consultant for Virginia Western Community College. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in economics with teacher certification from Harvard, studied international finance and economics at University College in London and is a May 1994 candidate for a master's degree in business administration at the R.B. Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech. ENGINEERING

\ DEBORAH HARRELL ALDERSON has been promoted to vice president of defense systems for Techmatics Inc., a Fairfax-based firm providing information technology and engineering services to government and industry clients. Alderson has more than 15 years' experience in the management of programs serving the defense industry. She is responsible for a staff of 300 and annual revenue of more than $20 million. She has been with Techmatics since 1985, working as general manager of the engineering management and technical analysis division since 1990 and as director of business development from 1987 through 1990. The Virginia Tech graduate lived in Blacksburg from 1974 to 1980 while she held a graduate teaching assistantship at the university's College of Home Economics.

HOSPITALITY

Roanoke Airport Marriott hotel has appointed JOHN DAVIS convention services manager. He will be responsible for coordination of groups of 50 rooms or more from the point of sale until the group is in the hotel. Davis, a graduate of Michigan State University, comes to Roanoke from Wyndham Hotels in Farmington, Mich.

Roanoke Airport Marriott also has appointed MELISSA MILIONE catering sales\ manager. She will be responsible for sales of catering and meeting functions\ for groups of more than 50 people who do not require guest rooms. She is a\ graduate of Virginia Tech and has experience with Hyatt Hotels.

INSURANCE

\ JOEL A. NICHOLS, senior vice president of Scott Insurance, has been named senior executive vice president. Nichols, who has been with Scott for 13 years, manages the Roanoke office and is a member of the board of directors. In his new position he will continue working from the Roanoke office, where he will manage corporate operations and service and administrative personnel for all five of Scott's regional offices. He also will serve his present clients and pursue new business for the company.

MANUFACTURING

Stanley Furniture Co. Inc. has hired TOM VANDERMEULEN to be the primary\ liaison between Stanley and Sears, Roebuck & Co. Prior to joining Stanley,\ VanderMeulen worked at Sears for 30 years, the past two as division\ merchandise manager. He retired from Sears in June. As a Stanley consultant,\ he will continue to work in Chicago. Before becoming a divisional merchandise\ manager at Sears, VanderMeulen was a buyer for two years in the company's\ furniture department, where he worked closely with Stanley.

MEDIA

WSET-TV has hired DOUG HARRISON as sales manager to work in the\ Roanoke-Lynchburg-Danville television market. Harrison, who has 13 years' experience in television sales and news reporting, comes from Waco, Texas. He will be stationed in WSET's Roanoke office and will be responsible for local\ sales and new business development.

ORGANIZATIONS

THE REV. NOEL TAYLOR, pastor of High Street Baptist Church and former mayor of Roanoke, has been selected as one of 70 outstanding leaders throughout the world to receive the Toastmasters International Communication and Leadership award. Taylor has been pastor of his church for 32 years. He was a Roanoke councilman for 21 years, was vice mayor for two years and was mayor from 1975 to 1992. He was given the award for his ability to bring people together across political party lines, transcending race, creed, gender and economic status, to work for a common goal.

RETAIL

CarMerica Inc. has named E. BRUCE LANKFORD store manager at the Roanoke CarMerica center, which is owned and operated by Bogle Tires Co. Inc. Prior to joining CarMerica, Lankford was employed by White's Tire Distributors Inc. The Danville native has worked in the tire and automotive industry for 30 years. CarMerica is a national franchiser of tire and automotive service centers.
