ASTHMA DEATHS DROP AFTER 13-YEAR CLIMB

The number of annual deaths from asthma declined in the United States for the first time in 13 years, according to a study released Saturday at the meeting of the American College of Allergy and Immunology.

National Center for Health Statistics reported that deaths from asthma nearly tripled from 1,674 in 1977 to 4,869 in 1989, but then decreased slightly to 4,819 in 1990, the most recent year for which records are available.
