HASKINS' 224 YARDS NOT ENOUGH FOR VMI

The Citadel's Everette Sands ran for a 37-yard touchdown and finished fifth in the Southern Conference in all-time rushing as the Bulldogs beat VMI 34-33 on Saturday.

Sands, with 3,926 yards, is The Citadel's No. 2 all-time rusher.

The Bulldogs (5-6 overall, 4-4 Southern Conference), who led after three quarters, had to fight off a fourth-quarter comeback by VMI (1-9, 1-6). The rally was led by freshman running back Tom Haskins.

The Keydets were down 34-20 when Haskins scored on a 67-yard run with 6 minutes, 18 seconds left. He scored again on a 33-yard run with 5:55 left to bring the score to 34-33. An extra-point attempt by Geoff Goff could have tied the score, but the kick was no good.

"This game speaks volumes about both institutions," said Charlie Taffe, The Citadel's coach. "Neither team gave up . . . that last one [extra point] was huge."

Haskins also has 532 yards in kick returns this year, 22 shy of Bryant McMillian's school record set in 1991.

Both offenses kept the ball on the ground. The teams combined for 727 yards rushing on 114 carries. They were a combined 4-of-8 passing for 35 yards.

"I hate losing," said Jim Shuck, the Keydets' coach. "We were huge underdogs and we just came battling back but fell a little short.

On the missed extra point that cost VMI a tie, Shuck said: "There's no one play that makes a football game like this."

The Keydets' 344 yards rushing was their second-best total this year.

VMI receiver Marlon Anderson had one reception to keep a personal streak alive. He has caught a pass in 11 consecutive games.
