GOLDEN EAGLES EDGE BROOKVILLE IN SEMINOLE FINAL

Tanya Nelms and Kim English combined for 14 of Staunton River's 21 fourth-quarter points, and the Golden Eagles held on to beat Brookville 48-44 for the Seminole District girls' basketball tournament title Saturday night.

Nelms, who finished with 13 points, hit two 3-pointers in the final period as Staunton River (21-2 overall) overcame a 30-27 deficit after three quarters.

Staunton River, the tournament's top seed, will play Thursday at 8 p.m. in the Group AA Region III semifinals against the winner of Tuesday night's Martinsville-William Byrd game.

The Bees (12-10), who were seeded seventh, will play Piedmont District champion Bassett on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the opening round of the Region III tournament.
