BASSETT WINS PIEDMONT

Kim Hairston poured in 32 points as Bassett edged Martinsville 83-78 to win the Piedmont District girls' basketball tournament Saturday night.

The top-seeded Bengals (23-0) rolled to a 53-35 halftime lead, but the second-seeded Bulldogs (18-5) chipped away and closed to three points down with 3 minutes, 38 seconds remaining.

Timesland's top-ranked team was cool under pressure, however, sinking six of eight free throws in the last three minutes to ice the victory.

Aimee Barker added 24 points for Bassett.

Samantha Ferguson led Martinsville with 23 points, 17 in the fourth quarter.
