OBIT BATES, RALPH N.
BATES, Ralph N., 68, of Smith Mountain Lake, died Friday, November 12,
1993. He was born in Wyandotte, Michigan, a member of First Baptist Church,
Roanoke, a veteran of WWII, and a graduate of the University of Michigan. He
was retired plant manager with Union Carbide, former member of the Rotary,
Kiwanas and Smith Mountain Lake Lion's Clubs, and served on the board of Small
Colleges of West Virginia. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Bates; son, Loren
N. Bates, Marietta, Ohio; daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Paul Kyle,
Shreveport, La., Nancy and Craig West, W. Palm Beach, Fla.; brothers, Warren
A. Bates of Valley Springs, Calif., Robert E. Bates of St. George, Utah;
grandchildren, Julie and Wesley Kyle, Stephen, Christopher, Meghan and
Jennifer West. Services will be conducted from First Baptist Church Roanoke,
11 a.m. Monday, with Rev. Charles Ward officiating. Interment will follow in
Sherwood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made
to Scruggs Volunteer Rescue Squad. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4
and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.
