GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT THURSDAY

Thursday marks the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout, the 17th year for the nationwide effort to encourage smokers to give up smoking.

If you're thinking of quitting smoking, follow these tips:

Throw out all cigarettes and put away the ashtrays

Keep busy and hold a pencil instead of a cigarette

Chew gum or eat carrot sticks when you have the urge to smoke

Drink water and fruit juices

Avoid spicy foods, coffee and drinks with caffeine which can trigger the urge to smoke.

If you know someone who is planning to quit, offer assistance by keeping in close contact by phone or in person; being a calm, reassuring influence; and offering praise.

For more information about the Great American Smokeout, call 800-227-2345.
