NEW RIVER PEOPLE

SANDRA POPE, a native of Blacksburg, has been named director of Purdue University's child-care program in West Lafayette, Ind.

She will oversee a staff of 16 to help provide daytime child care and education to 64 children from ages 2 to 6.

Pope received a bachelor's degree in child-care administration from Virginia Tech in 1987 and completed a master's degree in child development there in 1990.

\ G.P. HATCHER, a local writer, historian and retired long-time employee of the Radford Army Ammunition Plant, has published his memoirs of growing up in West Virginia in a book of short stories and essays called "Memories of an Old West Virginia Hillbilly." The book is on sale at the Gallery Cafe bookstore in Radford.

The Shawsville High School Class of 1939 held its 54th reunion this fall at the Huckleberry Inn in Christiansburg. Of the 21 graduating members, 13 were present. Those attending were MARGARET (ALIFF) BASHAM, LOUISE (COMPTON) CARD, MARVIN COOK, HAROLD CROZIER, JACK CUPP, MARGARET (HESLIP) DEYERLE, HILDA (BLANKENSHIP) HELM, KERMIT JEWELL, KITTY (SISSON) McCOY, EDNA (HALL) RAINES, HAZEL (LONG) WATERS, ROMA (SISSON) WILLIAMS and PERCY WOOD.

\ JOHN HOSNER, 68, won the Hosner 15th Bud Light Stadium 10K Race held in St. Louis last month.

This is the second time he has won the race, which is handicapped based on age.

With a 12 1/2-minute handicap, Hosner ran this year's race in 29 minutes and 11 seconds.

\ WINNIE SIMMONS was recently awarded a Women's International Bowling Congress pen for having participated in more than 20 consecutive Virginia State Bowling Tournaments throughout the state.

Simmons is a regular member of the Meadowbrook team, bowling at Triangle Lanes in Christiansburg.

At the State Fair of Virginia, ANGELA KIM HOBBS of Dublin was Reserve Champion in English Showmanship.

She also placed fifth in Saddle Seat Equitation, fourth in Large English Pleasure Pony and was first champion in the Large English Pleasure Pony Championship.

\ COURTNEY McGUIRE has been named case manager of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the New River Valley.

She is responsible for volunteer and client matching, training and case management.

Winners in the quilt show held last month at the Floyd County Arts and Crafts Festival were: CHIME SALTZ, Pulaski, first place, large-pieced; PAULINE HODGES, Willis, third place, wall quilt; SUSAN BRITTINGHAM, Riner, first place, contemporary quilt; GRACE KARNES, Christiansburg, first place, kit or other technique; FRANCES HELMS, Willis, second place, kit or other technique; SUSAN BRITTINGHAM, Riner, third place, quilted clothing and JUDY LEWIS, Willis, the People Choice Award from the Old Church Gallery Quilters Guild.

\ DR. SAMUEL ALDRIDGE, formerly of Christiansburg, has joined the division of vascular surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.

He earned a medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and an undergraduate degree in chemistry from James Madison University.

Aldridge lives in Moorestown, N.J., with his wife and two children.

\ CHRISTINE PRICE, 4, daughter of Gary and Sharlene Price of Elliston, won the Walt Disney Drawing Contest held by the Richmond chapter of the American Automobile Association. She received a $100 savings bond.

Christine attends St. Anne's Day School in Salem.

Animal Care Inc. of Blacksburg recently announced the winners of a cat photo contest held during the summer.

The winners are: CINDY, MIKE and PHYLLIS OLINGER, Blacksburg, first place for their picture of Puddy Olinger; BETTY ANNE MESSINA, Dublin, second place for a picture of Katy Lou; JILL and JOHN COGGIOLA, Radford, third place for the picture of Whitley.

Also tying for third place was MARA SERVAITES, Blacksburg, for the picture of "Cat with an Unknown Name."

\ BOB SHELL, a Radford photographer, was invited to show a collection of his photos in a three-person presentation with Annie Leibovitz and Douglas Kirkland.

The work was presented in New York at the Jacob Javits Center.

The collection is being shown throughout the United States.

\ DON BLATT of Blacksburg was named as one of 22 members of the board of directors at Camp Alta Mons in Shawsville.

Alta Mons is a Roanoke District United Methodist facility.

\ HAZEL HUBBARD, retired librarian at Virginia Tech, displayed her quilts at the latest meeting of the Alpha Lambda Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.

She has been a member of the chapter since 1973, and most recently served as the recording secretary. JANE CARR, English teacher at Blacksburg High School, was chosen as the honoree for 1993. This award was presented at the New River Coordinating Council meeting held in Galax.

Carr is a former president of the Alpha Lamba Chapter and has been a member since 1973.

New River Riders, the Montgomery County 4-H Horse Club, held its first Open Horse Show last month at Walnut Springs Stables in Blacksburg.

The Junior Points winner was ASHLEY NELSON; COURTNEY WILLIAMS won the Open Division.

The PULASKI COUNTY RETIRED TEACHERS ASSOCIATION was recognized as the outstanding unit of Area II of the Virginia Retired Teachers Association. ODETTE GRAHAM, chapter president, was presented with a handcrafted Blue Ridge walnut gavel.

The Southside Garden Club held a Home and Garden Flower Show last month at the home of MRS. DANIEL LUDWIG.

The winners of the show were: MRS. LUDWIG, first place, tricolor award and first place, flower show award; MRS. E.V. RUSSELL, MRS. R.L. SIMPSON, MRS. R.Q. CANNELL, MRS. ROBINSON and MRS. LUDWIG all received blue ribbons for artistic design. Other awards given were: MRS. CANNELL, the awards for horticulture excellence and merit; and MRS. DONALD BLOSS, award of appreciation for her educational and conservation exhibit.

Members receiving blue ribbons for horticulture specimens were: MRS. LYNN GLOVER, MRS. CARL WITHERSPOON, MRS. LUDWIG, MRS. JAMES MOORE, MRS. SIMPSON, MRS. ROBINSON, MRS. BLOSS, MRS. CANNELL, MRS. THOMAS CACECI, MRS. ROBERT HENDRICKS, MRS. FRED MORRIS, MRS. L.E. MOSELEY and MRS. JAMES MUENCH.
