CLINTON GETS LOW MARKS ON CRIME, ECONOMY

President Clinton's approval rating has fallen to a post-World-War-II low of 49 percent for a chief executive a year after election, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll released Monday.

The impetus for the low rating appears to be increasing concern over crime, with 21 percent of those interviewed identifying it as the nation's biggest problem, well ahead of unemployment - 9 percent - and health care - 8 percent.

Clinton's handling of the crime issue gained approval of 39 percent of the 1,218 people interviewed by telephone Nov. 11-14, with 52 percent disapproving. His handling of the economy also was viewed negatively, with 43 percent approving and 50 percent disapproving.

The administration's health care plan also appeared to be slipping in popularity, with 46 percent approval, down from 56 percent approval when it was introduced in September. - Associated Press
