BLACKSBURG TRANSIT HONORED

Blacksburg Transit has received an Outstanding Public Transportation System Achievement Award from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation. The transit system was honored Monday during a meeting of the state Transportation Board.

Mayor Roger Hedgepeth and Blacksburg Transit General Manager Michael Connelly accepted the award for the town, which was recognized as the outstanding urban-rural transit system in Virginia.

Alexandria Transit received the award for the outstanding urbanized system.

Blacksburg Transit operates a 26-bus, fixed-route service that includes a route to Christiansburg. Over the past year, Blacksburg Transit:

Provided 1.6 million passenger trips, a 3 percent increase over the previous year.

Saw 8 percent more passenger revenue.

Implemented a Quality First program.

Began a campus circulator route that became so successful that it was expanded to a route system.
