Foster was a member of several music groups, and her volunteer activity included work with the theatre as well as public radio. She also was a past president of the Laurel Oratorio Society.
Mona Black, administrative director of Mill Mountain Theatre, said Foster was her "conduit."
"When I was doing something else, Barbara had the ability to just know when it was her time to step in and pick up," Black said. "She was the sort of person who was always thinking ahead to things that would be happening, and she always gave me good advice. I don't look forward to the months ahead without her."
Anne Hammersley, a member of the theater's board of directors, said Foster's volunteer efforts never went unnoticed.
"She would be [at the theater] all day and then go home and change and come back for the performance [to continue her work]," Hammersley said.
Foster is survived by her husband, Ralph; son, Christopher; and daughter, Stasie.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Oakey's South Chapel.
