6 HUNTERS GET INJURED IN 2 DAYS

Since the deer season opened Monday in Virginia for hunters armed with modern firearms, four hunters have been wounded and two were injured when they fell from tree stands.

Shotgun pellets accounted for two of the woundings. In Westmoreland County, a hunter was struck by a single pellet fired by a companion while both were hunting deer with dogs.

In Hanover County, a squirrel hunter shot himself in the foot while retrieving a shotgun from his vehicle, state and local officials said Tuesday.

Two other hunters were injured in rifle accidents in Augusta and Bath counties. In Bath, a hunter shot himself in the foot while taking a rifle out of his car.

In Augusta, a hunter dropped his rifle and then shot himself in the left index finger as he tried to clear the bore of dirt.

Two hunters - one in Grayson County and one in Franklin County - were injured when they fell out of tree stands Monday. The hunter in Franklin lost his balance and fell 15 feet, breaking both arms.

Since July there have been 28 hunting accidents, including three fatalities, according to the state Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, which keeps its records by the fiscal year.

One man died Oct. 2 after he fell out of his tree stand; another hunter was shot Nov. 2 in Wythe County during the muzzle-loading season; and another deer hunter was killed Nov. 12 by a shotgun by a person hunting illegally in Lynchburg.
