RELIGION BRIEFS

\ THE REV. GENE EDMUNDS, who entered the ordained ministry from Second Presbyterian Church of Roanoke, will become associate pastor of Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church on Dec. 1. For the past three years Edmunds has been on the staff of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Charleston, S.C.

Before her entrance into Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Edmunds was active in several ecumenical and peace activist groups in Western Virginia. She will assist the Rev. F. Tupper Garden at Raleigh Court.

\ THE REV. PHILIP MOTLEY, formerly of Boykins, will officiate at his first services at Grandin Court Baptist Church Sunday. Motley, who is married with two sons, succeeds the Rev. Robert M. Hamner, who retired 16 months ago after a 30-year pastorate.

\ WEST END UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 13th Street at Campbell Ave, S.W. has scheduled "I Am Thankful" Day Sunday. Beginning with a service at 10:30 a.m., it will include a full meal for members and guests. Preparations for the Advent season will follow.

\ REACH FOR A STAR, Calvary Baptist Church's annual ministry to the needy at Christmas, will take place Nov. 28 at the 11 a.m. service. Members select a star from a tree which represents such gifts as Christmas dinner, clothing, other wrapped gifts and devotional items for adults and children. The gifts will be returned on Dec. 12, and the following week home-delivered to families who have been referred by social service agencies.

\ THE L.B. FLORENCE ENSEMBLE of Summerfield, N.C., will perform at Jerusalem Baptist Church Sunday at 3:30 p.m. to benefit the Usher Board 2. The church is at 1014 Norfolk Ave. S.W.

\ STAR CITY SOCIAL CLUB, a ministry of Christ Episcopal Church for emotionally disabled adults in the Roanoke Valley, has won the public service award from the Mental Health Association of Virginia. The club provides twice-monthly socials with dinner and activities for about 35 residents of adult homes and has done so for more than 10 years.

\ A SEMINAR FOR COUPLES from two-tradition marriages has been re-scheduled for Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church on Turner Road in Salem. The program is for those who wish to be faithful to their own church but want to share in some activities with their spouse. Call 387-0491 for more information.

\ THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT has completed a fund-raising campaign for a church building at 4850 Grandin Road Extension S.W. Construction is expected to begin early next year. The proposed church will seat 450 and will be near the Virginia 419 intersection in the Oak Grove area.

The congregation, which follows an evangelical style of worship, was formed six years ago. Under the leadership of the Rev. Quigg Lawrence Jr., it has worshiped at several places, the most recently at North Cross School.

\ CARING EVANGELISM, a workshop by a staff member of Stephen Ministries congregational development agency, is scheduled for Sunday from 1 to 9 p.m. at Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church, 707 Washington Ave., Vinton. The workshop is for Christians of all faiths who want to learn more effective ways to present their reason for taking Jesus seriously in their lives. The leader, \ Michael Currier, has been a consultant and trainer for the past five years. The workshop, "Grow Your Faith, Grow Your Church," is one of several programs Stephen Ministries of St. Louis, Mo., offers by contract with congregations. The introductory workshop Sunday costs $45 per person.

\ "EXCELLING AS A WOMAN OF GOD" will be the theme of a prayer breakfast Saturday at 9 at the Brown Derby Pancake House. The program for women will be led by Delores Brown and Gail Thompson of the sponsoring Victory Christian Center. Buffet breakfast is available for $4. Call 343-3221 for more information.
