The "Wasteline Express" will have 30 rail cars, each capable of hauling 100 tons. It will use 10 to 15 rail cars on each trip to the landfill.
The number of cars will vary depending on the volume of trash. The localities which will use the landfill - Roanoke, Vinton and Roanoke County - generate about 700 tons of trash daily.
Garbage trucks will haul the trash to the transfer station, where it will be unloaded onto the rail cars. Each night, the train will take the trash collected that day to the landfill.
The rail cars will be unloaded using a rail-car dumper, which rotates the car upside down, dumping the waste, which then is loaded onto landfill trucks for burial in the landfill.
The train will return to the transfer station during the night with the empty cars to be filled the next day.
