GOSPEL SINGER TO BENEFIT FROM CONCERT

Roanoke Valley gospel singer Bill Peyton will be the beneficiary of a concert Saturday to help pay for his cancer treatments.

Peyton is the leader of the Southern Statesmen, a gospel group that has sung across the South and issued several recordings.

Though Peyton still sings with the group, he recently has had to undergo renewed treatment for cancer that had been in remission. He has some medical insurance, concert organizers said, but much of his treatment - including some experimental procedures - weren't covered.

Saturday's concert will be held at Fellowship Baptist Church, 929 Murray Ave. S.E., behind Jackson Junior High School, beginning at 7 p.m.

Performers will include the Fellowship Trio, the Fellowship Baptist Choir and the Southern Statesmen.

There is no admission charge, but an offering for Peyton will be taken.
