NEWPORT NEWS' BATEMAN LEAVING CONGRESS AFTER '96

Rep. Herbert Bateman plans to serve one more term in Congress but will not seek re-election in 1996, an aide said Thursday.

Bateman, R-Newport News, has told party leaders that he wants to spend more time with his family.

The 65-year-old Bateman was a member of the General Assembly for 15 years. He entered the legislature as a Democrat but switched to the GOP in 1976.

He was first elected to Congress in 1982, a year after losing a bid for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor.

He was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago but is fully recovered, said Dan Scandling, Bateman's press secretary. - Associated Press
