FARR'S CONDITION STILL `CRITICAL'

Golfer Heather Farr, who underwent surgery three times in a week to stop brain hemorrhaging, suffered seizures early Thursday and remained in critical condition, her surgeon said in Scottsdale, Ariz.

"In the big picture, she takes one step forward and two steps back," Dr. Richard Zimmerman of the Mayo Clinic-Scottsdale said.

Farr was hospitalized in the intensive care unit of Scottsdale Memorial Hospital-North. She underwent the latest operation there Wednesday.

Farr, 28, has fought breast cancer and other ailments since 1989.

Since having a bone-marrow transplant in April 1991 and other cancer treatments, Farr's blood does not clot easily and she needed transfusions before last week's surgery.

She originally underwent surgery Nov. 11 to relieve brain hemorrhaging after she complained of severe headaches. Her condition was upgraded last Friday to fair from serious. It was downgraded this week when Zimmerman again tried to relieve pressure on the brain when she reported severe headaches.

He said he operated again Wednesday morning after Farr began having weakness on her right side and speech difficulties. She had improved by later in the day but began having the seizures early Thursday, Zimmerman said.

He said he didn't know her prognosis and was awaiting tests to see how much her bleeding has stopped and whether it is new bleeding or the same problems as before.

Zimmerman said Farr is not in a lot of pain but is very fatigued.

He said her husband and other relatives remain with her around the clock.

The former Arizona State standout, who joined the LPGA Tour in 1986, was diagnosed with breast cancer in July 1989.

Since then, she has undergone a mastectomy and breast reconstruction, the bone marrow transplant, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and an X-ray procedure to destroy a cancerous tumor on her spinal cord.
