University of Virginia women's basketball coach Debbie Ryan announced that Monick Foote, a 5-foot-10 forward from New Castle, Del., has signed to play for the Cavaliers.

Foote, considered among the top high school players in the country, averaged 25 points and 11 rebounds for The Sanford School.

UVa also signed 5-7 guard Tiffany Bower of Monacan High School in Richmond. She averaged 22 points, seven rebounds and seven assists last season.

The UVa men's team plays host to Verich Reps, an AAU team, at University Hall tonight at 7:30. Winston Cup driver Terry Labonte and Grand National driver Hermie Sadler will be available at 6:15 p.m. for an autograph and photo session.

Virginia's second exhibition game will be against an Australian National Team on Monday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for both games are $4 for adults and $2 for youngsters 18 and under.

Shane Carnes became the fourth basketball player from Oak Hill Academy to receive a Division I scholarship when he signed a letter-of-intent with Tennessee. Carnes, a 6-foot-1 point guard, scored more than 1,000 points in three years at Dobbyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport, Tenn.

Oak Hill coach Steve Smith said Carnes did not learn until last week that his scores on the Scholastic Assessment Test met NCAA standards and did not take any official visits, although he was recruited by West Virginia, Rutgers and Iona.

Mike Maddox, a 6-8 forward from Mays High School in Atlanta, elected not to sign during the early period. The five schools Maddox has visited are Georgia Tech, Virginia, Kansas, Villanova and Western Kentucky.

The Ferrum College women's team begins its season tonight as the host team for the annual Ferrum Tip-Off Tournament. Niki Claiborne (15.4 points, 7 rebounds) and Sarah Quesenberry (12.4 ppg, 5.8 reb) are Ferrum's top returning players. The Panthers were 9-16 overall and 3-7 in the Dixie Conference last season.

Ferrum plays Lynchburg tonight at 6, followed by Mary Washington and Emory & Henry at 8. The consolation game is Saturday at 2 p.m., with the finals set for 4 p.m.
