WALKERS MAKE A DUAL EFFORT FOR THE HEART

When 350 Roanoke area walkers take off Sunday on the American Heart Association's annual Heart Walk, they hope to raise awareness as well as money.

"We are trying to spread the message that walking or some type of regular exercise can help people get physically fit and condition their hearts and lungs," said Dr. H.E. "Chip" Bowling, chairman of the event. Cardiovascular disease kills more Virginians than any other disease.

To raise money for heart research and community education, walkers will sign up sponsors for the six-mile heart-shaped course that begins at the upper level of Towers Mall.

As of Wednesday, 350 walkers and 34 companies had signed up to walk the course. Organizers hope to exceed the $20,000 raised during last year's walk, when 300 individuals and 30 companies participated in the event.

Each walker who raises $100 will receive an American Heart Walk T-shirt and will be eligible for prizes. The walk begins at 1:30 p.m., and pre-registration begins at 1 p.m.

For more information about participating in the walk or sponsoring a walker, call the Roanoke affiliate of the American Heart Association at (703) 989-2810.
