THE PEOPLE COLUMN

The Kennedy estate, famed as JFK's winter White House and darkened by the William Kennedy Smith sex scandal, went on the market in Palm Beach, Fla., Friday for $7 million.

"The Kennedy family has always enjoyed going to Palm Beach," said Bryan R. Dunn, a family spokesman. "They have a rich and long tradition of going down there. But it makes sense to sell the property now."

The Mediterranean-style, seaside mansion was built in 1923 and purchased 10 years later by Joseph P. Kennedy. It has six bedrooms and 8,500 square feet.

President Kennedy used it as a winter resort.

The sale is "wholly unrelated" to Smith's trial, Dunn said.

\ For years, United Press International correspondent Helen Thomas has closed White House news conferences by saying, "Thank you, Mr. President." But often she wishes she could do it differently.

"You'll never know how many times I've wanted to say, `No thank you, Mr. President,' " Thomas said Thursday at a ceremony in Phoenix where she was given the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism and Telecommunication.

The former CBS newsman presented the award, given by the Arizona State University School of Journalism and Telecommunication.

Thomas, 73, has covered every president since John F. Kennedy.

\ A Winchester, N.H., a high school principal whose unorthodox methods nearly got him run out of town, then made him the subject of a book and television movie, is quitting.

Dennis Littky told Thayer High School students of his decision Friday. "I've had 13 great years. Things are going beautifully and it's time for me to move on."

Littky's high-energy leadership and unconventional methods helped produce dramatic improvements at the school, including a reduced dropout rate. The school's teachers won praise nationally. But Littky, 49, was fired in 1986 by the Winchester School Board, which said he allowed too much familiarity with students. Voters gave him back his job.

He was the subject of the book "Teacher" and was played by "L.A. Law" star Michael Tucker in the 1992 NBC movie "A Town Torn Apart."
