LAUREL PARK'S LATE FIELD GOAL SHOCKS NO. 1 MAGNA VISTA

Laurel Park's Darrell Wilson kicked a 33-yard field goal with 15 seconds left Friday as the Lancers toppled the state's top-ranked Group AA team, Magna Vista, 15-14 in a Region III Division 3 high school football playoff game.

Magna Vista (10-1) had rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit to take a 14-12 lead when Evan Penn scored rushing touch downs on consecutive carries. The second, a 37-yard burst in the third quarter, came on the first play after a Laurel Park turnover as the Warriors took a 14-12 lead.

Laurel Park (8-3) completed passes of 9, 12, 21 and 19 yards from Wilson to move to first-and-goal at the 8-yard line with 47 seconds left.

Wilson, however, was sacked for a 9-yard loss on second down and had to throw out of bounds to stop the clock on third down with 15 seconds left.

Wilson then booted the game-winner, and two desperation passes by Magna Vista fell incomplete.

Laurel Park will face Jefferson Forest next week in the Region III championship. Jefferson Forest beat Martinsville 28-13 on Friday night.

Rural Retreat 14, Parry McCluer 7: At Buena Vista, Chris Bass' 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter gave Rural Retreat a victory over Parry McCluer in the opening round of the Group A, Region C, Division 1 playoffs.

Rural Retreat (8-3) plays Narrows next week for the regional title.

John Wheeler, who led all rushers with 96 yards, scored in the first quarter on a 6-yard run to give Parry McCluer (9-2) a 7-0 lead. But Bass evened the score in the second when he hit Jason Childers with a touchdown pass from 1-yard out.

Amherst County 14, Rockbridge County 13: At Lexington, Rockbridge County's storybook season came to an end Friday night when the Wildcats failed to convert a late two-point conversion and lost their opening playoff game.

The Wildcats scored their second touchdown of the game on a 3-yard run by Andy Cline with only 2:31 to play.

Wildcats quarterback Scott Rogers was throwing for Cline on the two-point attempt, but the Lancers' defenders seemed to sense the play was coming. The pass was deflected by a lineman and defensive back Larry Hunter intercepted it.
