5 petitions filed in bankruptcy court

Five petitions with business connections have been filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Virginia in Roanoke.

Universal Controls and Engineering Inc., trading as Premier Computer Service, of Christiansburg, asked for liquidation. It estimated assets at less than $50,000 and liabilities of more than $500,000.

Richard L. Miller of Christiansburg, president of Universal Controls and Engineering, filed a personal petition for liquidation. He estimated assets of more than $100,000 and liabilities of more than $500,000.

Philip A. Lumsden of Floyd asked for reorganization and protection from creditors. He showed assets of $100,000, primarily an interest in the stock of Phil's IGA of Floyd, and liabilities of $100,000.

Betty Jean Henley of Dublin sought liquidation. She operated the Merle Norman Studio at Radford. Assets were $79,400 and liabilities were $90,677.

Randall Ray Middleton Sr. and Debra Faye Middleton of Pennington Gap, doing business as Middleton Logging, asked for liquidation. They had assets of $13,575 and liabilities of $37,169.

Ad agency does work for business at mall

System 4 Advertising Agency Inc. of Roanoke will handle media purchases and other promotional work for Pratt's Spiral Sliced Hams, which has opened for the holiday season at Tanglewood Mall. The Pratt family operation is based in Kingsport, Tenn.
