NAMES & CHANGES

DAVID R. GOODE, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Norfolk Southern Corp., has been elected chairman of the Association of American Railroads. He succeeds Gerald Grinstein, chairman and chief executive officer of Burlington Northern Inc. Goode will serve a one-year term starting Jan. 1.

The Vinton native began his railroad career with Norfolk and Western Railway Co., one of Norfolk Southern's predecessor railroads, as a tax attorney in 1965. In 1985 he was named vice president-taxation for Norfolk Southern Corp., and in 1991 he became executive vice president-administration. He was elected president of Norfolk Southern Corp. later in 1991 and assumed the title of chairman, chief executive officer and director in 1992.

Goode holds a degree in accounting from Duke University and a doctorate of law from Harvard University.

ADVERTISING

SHAWN MURRAY has been promoted to associate creative director at The Packett Group. The Tampa, Fla., native joined the Roanoke agency in 1989 as art director and was promoted to senior art director two years later.

ARCHITECTS AND ENGINEERS

JAMES EDWIN JOHNSON has joined Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern of Roanoke as a senior architect and plant manager. Johnson formerly worked at Sherertz Franklin Crawford Shaffner Inc. in Roanoke. His responsibilities at HSMM will include programming, planning, design and project management. His projects have received awards for design from the Arizona Society of Architects, the Blue Ridge Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and the Interfaith Forum for Religion, Art & Architecture. He is a member of the board of directors of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

AUTOMOTIVE

KIRK SPITZNER has joined Car Guys Inc. as director of operations. Spitzner is responsible for coordinating expansion of the corporation's high-performance driving schools south to Road Atlanta in Georgia and north to Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania. He also will direct field services for the company's Decisive Driving Car Control program. The program uses a hydraulically-controlled vehicle as a mobile lab for teaching emergency recovery techniques to the public and to agencies such as the Virginia Department of Transportation.

EDUCATION

Eight new members have joined Community School's board of trustees: THOMAS L. EDWARDS, professor of economics and dean of graduate studies and international programs at Hollins College; ELENA ISLER, Spanish teacher at Community School; MARCY JOHNSON and MARIANA SORENSEN, co-coordinators of Community School's Strawberry Festival; DONNA KNOX, associate attorney at Woods, Rogers and Hazlegrove; MIKE MAXEY, vice president of admissions services at Roanoke College; ANN MOSER, middle school teacher at Community School; and KATERINA YANCEY, administrative assistant at Save-X. Community School, a private school for children age 2 1/2 to 13, was founded in 1971.

GOVERNMENT

CLAUDE WEBSTER, acting director of the Franklin County Department of Public Safety, has been named director effective Dec. 1. Webster comes to the position after being deputy director of operations for the department since August 1990. He was appointed acting director when the position became vacant in September after R. DAVID LAURRELL was appointed assistant county administrator. Webster, a Franklin County native, is a graduate of Bridgewater College.

HEALTH CARE

KEITH FRANKLIN has joined the staff of Our Lady of the Valley Retirement Community as director of marketing. He formerly was safety director for The Forest at Duke, a 240-unit retirement community in North Carolina, where he was responsible for compliance with state and federal regulations regarding the operation of retirement facilities.\ LONI HERGRUETER, new admissions counselor at Our Lady of the Valley, previously worked as a volunteer for the pastoral care ministry through Our Lady of Nazareth Church. Before that, the Ithaca (N.Y.) College graduate and native New Yorker worked as a project director for the advertising firm of Young and Rubicam in the medical communications department.

KATHY MATTHEWS has been hired as a social worker at the facility. She has 18 years' experience in social work. Her most recent position was mental health counselor at Lewis-Gale Hospital. She is a graduate of Greensboro (N.C.) College with a bachelor of science degree.

MEDICINE DRS. SCOTT B. DUBIT and PATRICIA L. SCHIRMER have joined the

medical staff at Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington. The husband and wife both have specialties in internal medicine and pediatrics. Dubit has joined the family practice group of Buena Vista Medical Associates and will maintain active privileges at the hospital. Shirmer has joined the hospital's emergency room staff.

Dubit received a medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and completed a combined residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at the University of Rochester (N.Y.) Strong Memorial Hospital. He was a research assistant at Vanderbilt and a medical examiner under a Public Health Fellowship with the Appalachian Student Health Coalition.

Schirmer also graduated from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and completed a combined residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at Strong Memorial Hospital. She completed a Pearson Fellowship in nutrition in West Bengal, India, and a Fellowship in Public Health for the Appalachian Student Health Coalition. Her work experience includes the Early Support Project at Nashville (Tenn.) General Hospital and research in pulmonary medicine at Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville.

ORGANIZATIONS

RESTAURANTS\ JEFF HULL has been named regional director of the Maine Course Hospitality Group, the Yarmouth, Maine-based company that recently acquired The Ground Round Restaurants in Roanoke, Danville and Lynchburg. He will oversee operations at all three locations from his office in Danville. Maine Course Hospitality Group is the largest franchisee in the Ground Round chain.

RETAIL

VINCE MARLETTA has been named manager of the Peebles Department Store in Covington. He had formerly worked in the company's Richmond and Prince Frederick, Md., stores. He will manage a staff of approximately 20 associates.

TRANSPORTATION

W. BRUCE WINGO, resident vice president of public affairs in Virginia for Norfolk Southern Corp., will assume similar public affairs responsibilities in Maryland.

WHOLESALE

PHIL MEADOR has been named marketing manager for Petro-Webb Commercial Fueling, a division of Webb's Oil Corp. He will coordinate marketing and sales of Petro-Webb's cardlock fueling network and accounting system to commercial fleets. Petro-Webb operates as an independent franchise of Pacific Pride Services Inc., and makes available to customers a network of fueling sites across the United States and Canada, as well as a system for tracking and controlling fuel costs. Webb's opened its first local site at the end of October, and several other local sites are being planned.
