KEEN TDS LEAD TRIBE BY SPIDERS

Troy Keen rushed for three touchdowns and Shawn Knight completed 20 of 27 passes for 262 yards Saturday as William and Mary beat Richmond 31-17 in a Yankee Conference game.

Keen, a sophomore fullback, had scoring runs of 4, 3 and 1 yard en route to gaining 66 yards on 18 carries.

William and Mary (9-2, 7-1) took a 21-3 halftime lead, scoring all its points in the second quarter. Richmond (5-6, 3-5) cut the lead to 21-17, scoring on a 22-yard run by Antoine Lee and a 2-yard plunge by Jon Strashensky to open the third quarter.

Keen bulled into the end zone late in the third quarter from 1-yard out to make the score 28-17, and Chris Dawson added a 24-yard field goal in the final quarter.

Uly Scott led the Spiders with 162 yards on 31 carries. Derek Fitzgerald had 145 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries for William and Mary, ranked No. 10 in Division I-AA.

William and Mary must wait until this afternoon to see where it will play in the Division I-AA playoffs.

"I think they are going to do well in the playoffs," Richmond coach Jim Marshall said. "They're the ones to keep your eyes on. They have offense, they have defense, and they have a kicking game. What else can you want?"

Knight's passing performance set an NCAA Division I-AA record for passing efficiency for a season, 204.6. The previous record of 181.3 was set by Marshall's Michael Payton in 1991.
