LATE TD PASS SINKS GENERALS

Bill Ring threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to John Dooley with 45 seconds remaining to give Georgetown a 17-14 football victory over Washington and Lee in the Bermuda Bowl on Saturday at Hamilton, Bermuda.

Tom Mason's 39-yard run had given the Generals (2-8) a 14-10 lead with just under five minutes remaining. Mason finished with 191 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 34 carries, giving him 1,004 yards this season - the first W&L running back to rush for more than 1,000 yards since Kevin Weaver in 1985.

In the first quarter, Mason scampered in from 2 yards out to make the score 7-7. But after recovering a W&L fumble, the Hoyas (4-5) took a 10-7 halftime lead on Brendan Gaughan's 22-yard field goal.

It was the first American football game played in Bermuda. Georgetown, a I-AA school, had no turnovers. Washington and Lee, a Division III school, turned the ball over three times. Six of the Generals' eight losses have been by eight points or less.

HARRISONBURG - Backup quarterback Greg Moore threw for two touchdowns, ran for a third and completed a crucial pass to set up the winning field goal as the Terriers beat the Dukes (6-5, 4-4) in a Yankee Conference game.

The victory clinches the conference championship and automatic berth for the Terriers in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.

Boston (11-0, 8-0) trailed 21-14 at halftime. Moore, who was 38-of-58 for a school record 442 yards, hit Carlton Myers for a 13-yard touchdown pass that made the score 21-21 late in the third quarter.

Boston's normal starter, Robert Dougherty, was sidelined with a fever and strep throat.

In the fourth quarter, Boston, ranked No. 6 in Division I-AA, had the ball on the JMU 32 facing third and three. Moore hit Ron Stephenson on a 17-yard completion to the James Madison 15. The Dukes defense held, and Mike Morello kicked a 27-yard field goal.

James Madison's Mike Cawley, who was 12-of-21 for 199 yards, had touchdown runs of 26 and 4 yards in the first quarter. Steve Agee had a 12-yard touchdown run in the second for the Dukes.

\ Liberty 27\ Villanova 13

LYNCHBURG - Antwan Chiles threw for one touchdown and ran for another as the Flames (6-5) beat the Wildcats (3-8). Liberty led 21-6 at halftime after Chiles scored from 10-yards out, Adrian Cherry went over on a 1-yard plunge and the defense recovered a fumble in the end zone. Villanova had 258 yards of offense as the Flames defense sacked the quarterback nine times, picked off one pass and allowed Villanova to convert only five of 12 third downs. Chiles was 24-of-39 for 293 yards with two interceptions.
