BUFFALOES DOMINATE IN REGION C

Who says a regional girls' basketball championship is no big deal now that both finalists go to the state tournament?

Floyd County certainly took the Group A Region C final as seriously as it did the first game of the tournament and, if anything, played harder in the last of the three games than it did in the first.

The immensely talented Buffaloes arrived at their coronation in high style after destroying Glenvar 78-35 on Saturday night at Fort Chiswell High School.

You'd think that after the Buffaloes' 23rd consecutive victory their coach, Alan Cantrell, would be used to this sort of spectacle by now. He seems to be as impressed with his players as anybody, though.

"I'm telling you what, there was some hustling going on out there tonight," Cantrell said.

Can't this team take it easy?

Do sharks ever stop swimming and feeding?

"I don't know why it is, but that's just us," said point guard Monica Lucas. "We had a lot of motivation tonight. We knew we had to win this so we could have one more game at home."

That they will have at 7 p.m. Tuesday, when Region D runner-up Hurley, a 56-50 loser to Thomas Walker on Saturday, visits for a state quarterfinal.

The Buffaloes (26-1) didn't waste any time putting this one away. Before the first half was over, Floyd County had forced 25 turnovers and attempted 46 field goals to the Highlanders' 16.

"Really?" Cantrell said. "I didn't know it was that bad. We were thinking about switching to our zone press like we usually do, but they were getting after it so well in the man press that we just stayed with that."

By halftime, the score was 42-14. Glenvar (18-6) pulled itself together somewhat in the third quarter (the Highlanders limited the turnovers to six) and still saw the lead grow to 32 points (60-28) in the next eight minutes.

"They have the strength and the quickness to do that kind of thing to you," Glenvar coach Dennis Layman said. "You add some young kids to that equation [Glenvar has one senior and six freshmen] and there's no telling where that ball's going."

Heather Beveridge led Glenvar with nine points. Marilea Hale was held to six.

The Highlanders face a Tuesday trip to far Southwest Virginia and Region D champion Thomas Walker for a 7:30 p.m. game.
