Reasons one through 1,000 are all the victories by the Roanoke basketball program over the years. Reason 1,001 is that it was the first win for this year's highly touted club.
Roanoke reached quadruple digits in the win column with a tougher-than-expected game in the opening round of the 10th annual Barker Realty-Salem Bank & Trust Tip-Off Tournament at the Bast Center.
"I've followed this program since I was a 6-year old kid," said Moir, whose father, Charlie, coached the Maroons in the 1970s. "It's great to be a part of a program like this.
"Of course, it's great to get that first win behind us, too. You don't want to get off to a bad start in your own tournament."
Roanoke (1-0) plays Ferrum, a 91-64 first-round winner over Bethany (Pa.) College, today at 3 p.m. in the tournament finals. The consolation game is at 1 p.m.
In its 81st year of basketball, Roanoke becomes the 18th college division program in the country to achieve 1,000 victories, joining Virginia Union and Randolph-Macon as the only Virginia schools in that group.
Reaching the millenium mark wasn't easy. The Maroons, who return four starters off last year's 20-6 team, needed a 22-2 run midway through the second half to untangle itself from the pesky Pioneers, an Ohio Athletic Conference squad that went 5-20 a year ago.
Junior forward Bryant Lee led all scorers with 16 points and was one of four Roanoke players in double figures. Senior swingman Hilliary Scott had 15 points, Kevin Martin 13 and Mike Thornton 11.
Marietta (0-1) was up 47-43 after a long 3-pointer by Joey Ferris with 11:30 left. Roanoke ended four scoreless minutes by changing its pressing defense and embarking on an 8-0 run that ended with Scott's 3-pointer after a turnover.
After Marietta's Kevin Mishler bottomed a 3-pointer that drew the Pioneers to 52-50 with 8:41 left, Roanoke scored 14 straight points to finally take control.
The lead grew steadily, topping out at 22 points when Thornton's 3-pointer made it 73-51 with just over two minutes remaining.
In the opener, Quincy Quick scored 21 of his game-high 32 points and hit three of his four 3-pointers in the first half to help Ferrum pull away by halftime. John Breedlove had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Panthers. Bethany was led by Jay Cohan's 14 points and Bobby Johnson's 12.
