MORE WORKERS INVOLVED IN OWN 401(K) PLANS

Workers who invest in 401(k) retirement plans are being asked to accept greater responsibility for managing their own accounts, says a new survey.

At companies that offer 401(k)s, a growing number now permit workers to shift their investment assets regularly - daily, in some cases. A growing number also are giving workers a greater variety of investment choices for their 401(k) money.

About 28 percent of the companies surveyed allow daily transfers for 401(k) participants, the survey found, up from only 13 percent last year.

Experts say workers generally should resist the urge to frequently shift their 401(k) investments. A proper strategy is to find a comfortable mix and stick with it. Any necessary adjustments should be made gradually as individual circumstances change.
