CLINTON BACKS THEORY OF LONE GUNMAN

Disputing the view held by most Americans, President Clinton said Monday he believes Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

At a news conference, Clinton was asked if he felt the Kennedy assassination case was closed and Oswald had acted alone.

"I'm satisfied with the finding that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone," he said without elaboration.

Most Americans are skeptical of the Warren Commission's conclusion that Oswald acted alone.

An Associated Press poll taken Nov. 5-9 found that just 15 percent of Americans felt Oswald acted alone, while 71 percent believed he was part of a conspiracy.

Eighty-two percent of the respondents said Americans have not been told the whole truth about the assassination, while 12 percent said they had been told everything.
