JAIL SUICIDE ATTEMPT THWARTED

A 20-year-old man was in Roanoke Memorial Hospital after he hanged himself Saturday morning in the Botetourt County jail.

Harry Hale used a bedsheet to hang himself, Sheriff Reed Kelly said. A jailer found him and, with the help of other inmates, managed to lower Hale down.

Kelly said Hale suffered no permanent damage from the attempted suicide. A hospital nursing supervisor said Hale's family had asked that no information be released on his condition.

Hale was in jail serving a 30-day sentence for third offense petty larceny, Kelly said.
