4 CAVS ON ACC TEAM

Four football players from Virginia were voted to the All-ACC first team headed by Florida State quarterback Charlie Ward, the only unanimous selection.

Offensive guard Mark Dixon, declared academically ineligible before the Cavaliers' final game, was joined on the first team by offensive tackle Jim Reid, tight end Aaron Mundy and defensive back Keith Lyle.

All are seniors.

UVa defensive end Mike Frederick and punter Will Brice made second-team, while Cavaliers named to the third team were defensive tackle Mark Krichbaum and inside linebackers Randy Neal and Tom Burns.

Ward was one of eight Seminoles voted to the first-team offense and defense by members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Writers Association. Ward, the leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy, received all 86 first-team votes for 172 points.

Ward, a senior, led Florida State to its second straight undefeated ACC title. Heading into Saturday's game against Florida, he has thrown for 2,586 yards and 23 touchdowns, with only two interceptions in 327 attempts.

Ward's favorite target, wide receiver Kez McCorvey, joined him on the offensive squad, along with center Clay Shiver. McCorvey has 67 catches for 894 yards, while Shiver has anchored a line that is second in the nation in total offense.

Five players were chosen from a Florida State defense which has held opponents to 92 points in 11 games. They were defensive lineman Derrick Alexander, inside linebacker Ken Alexander, outside linebacker Derrick Brooks, and defensive backs Corey Sawyer and Clifton Abraham.

North Carolina 1,000-yard rusher Curtis Johnson received the second highest vote total (164) behind Ward, getting 80 of a possible 86 top votes. Johnson is joined in the backfield by Georgia Tech's Dorsey Levens, who is averaging 7.4 yards per carry.

N.C. State's Eddie Goines is the other wide receiver. The junior leads the ACC in receiving yards (929) and touchdown catches (10).

Steve Videtich of N.C. State, a junior who has made 12 of 13 field-goal attempts, was voted the place-kicker.

On defense, Dred Booe of Wake Forest and Brentson Buckner of Clemson joined Alexander on the line. Booe is third in the ACC in tackles for loss, and Buckner anchored a Tiger front that was ranked 15th in the nation in scoring defense.

Damien Covington of N.C. State, third in the ACC in tackles, was voted to one linebacker position, along with teammate Tyler Lawrence, who made the team last year. \
