OBIT PHILLIPS, KARL J. SR.
PHILLIPS, Karl J. Sr., 85, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, November 22,
1993. He was a graduate of University of Richmond and lived in Richmond, and
he received the highest grade in the state of Virginia on the Civil
Engineering Exam in 1935. He qualified for the Olympics swimming tryout and
during World War II worked for the Army Corp of Engineers. After the war, he
worked for 15 years with the government as a senior draftsman. He moved to
Virginia Beach as exclusive photographer for Cavalier and Dunes Club. After
government service, he moved to Roanoke and established himself in the
photography business. He was president of Virginia Sports Car Club in 1957, a
member of the Professional Photographers Association of America, and also a
member of the Virginia P.P.A. He was a member of the Flying Eagles Club, a
member of the U.Va. Polo Club, and a member of the Sports Car Club of America.
He is survived by one son, Karl J. Phillips II, Roanoke; one daughter and
son-in-law, Pamela Phillips Gallman, and husband, Chuck, Charlotte, N.C.; one
sister, Peggy Gaskins, Richmond; one sister-in-law, Bea Smith, Roanoke; two
grandchildren, Jeff and Teik Phillips. Funeral services will be conducted from
Oakey's North Chapel, 3 p.m. Wednesday, November 24, with the Rev. Walter M.
Lockett Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
