In its quest to go where the buyers are, McDonald's has been delivering food from about 80 restaurants in the Tidewater area of Virginia, which includes Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Suffolk.
Ed Rensi, president of the company's domestic division, said Tuesday it was too early to tell how successful the experiment has been. It began a few months ago.
``We get up to 2,000 calls a day,'' said Chandra McCartney, an assistant manager for the delivery service in Virginia Beach. ``I definitely think it's here to stay.''
Delivery costs are as much as $2.50 or as little as nothing, depending on the price of the meal ordered. The food is kept in insulated bags and there is no guaranteed delivery time.
