FORD, GM MAY END 10-DAY SALES REPORTS

Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corp. are considering discontinuing their reports of 10-day auto sales figures, spokesmen for the two companies confirmed.

Instead, they may report sales figures on a monthly basis, as the other leading U.S. car maker, Chrysler Corp., does.

Tom Rhoades of Ford's marketing and sales operation cited the potential cost savings. He said 10-day sales figures can be misleading.

Jack Krellin, director of corporate news relations at GM, said it is reviewing its sales reporting schedule.

Chrysler stopped reporting 10-day sales figures in 1990, but Ward's Communications provides an estimate of Chrysler's 10-day figures.

Mike Cloherty, an economist at R.H. Wrightson & Associates, said that if another major auto maker stopped reporting 10-day figures, such a large part of the data would be estimated that they might not give an accurate reflection of the economy. - Knight-Ridder/Tribune
