CARQUEST BOWL OFFICIALS, UVA HAVE AGREEMENT

Virginia's football team will play in the Carquest Bowl if Arkansas upsets Lousiana State on Saturday, the Roanoke Times & World-News has learned.

Sources familiar with the bowl-selection process said UVa athletic director Jim Copeland reached tentative agreement with Carquest officials Wednesday that would involve guaranteed ticket purchases by the Cavaliers.

"You know I can't comment on that," Copeland said. "We have talked with the Carquest Bowl [Wednesday] and discussed their situation."

The Carquest Bowl, scheduled Jan. 1 at 1:30 p.m. in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; has the third choice of Big East teams and fifth choice of Southeastern Conference teams. However, only four SEC teams currently have the six victories over Division I-A opposition that the NCAA requires for a bowl bid.

The Big East team probably will be Miami unless West Virginia wins at Boston College, in which case the Eagles probably would go.

LSU (5-5) can clinch the spot with a victory over Arkansas (4-5-1) in a game that will be televised by ESPN on Saturday starting at 4 p.m. The Tigers, favored by two points, are bidding for their fourth victory in a row.

Arkansas defeated Tulsa 24-11 two weeks ago and was open last week.
