GORE DROPS PROPOSAL TO MERGE ATF, FBI

Vice President Gore's plan to merge the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms into the FBI has been scrapped, officials said Wednesday.

Administration officials apparently backed off after receiving little congressional support.

In a dispatch to all ATF stations, Director John W. Magaw notified them that Gore's "National Performance Review intends to withdraw the recommendation.

The decision follows the death of a similar proposal to combine the Drug Enforcement Administration with the FBI. - The Washington Post
