RUSHDIE MEETS CLINTON, WELCOMES HIS SUPPORT

British author Salman Rushdie, shunned by the Bush administration, met briefly with President Clinton on Wednesday and said the invitation to the White House was a "political act" of support in his struggle against an Iranian death sentence.

Rushdie said his meeting with Clinton was "a major development in this case." He said there was "no doubt in my mind this will send a message around the world."

Rushdie was forced underground in 1989 when the Iranian government issued a fatwa, or religious edict, condemning him to death for his book "The Satanic Verses," which some Muslims say is blasphemous to Islam. - Associated Press A-11 ADD nat brf
